1 8 17 morning call

Double session for me yesterday, the second one at the Bay. It was chest to head high with a little bump induced by the northerly wind, but it was still fun. The set in the photo was the best I saw.

West Maui trying to look like East Maui.

5am significant buoy readings
South shore
Lanai
0.4ft @ 16s from 217° (SW)

Just a sliver of southerly energy at the south facing local buoys, but that doesn't mean it's flat. Check the webcams.

North shore
N
4.4ft @ 11s from 17° (NNE)

Pauwela
4.8ft @ 12s from 26° (NNE)
4.2ft @ 8s from 16° (NNE)
2.4ft @ 4s from 32° (NE)

Here's a quote from the 12 28 16 morning call: "the dominant direction of the swells is going to be NE for at least the first two weeks of January". So no surprise if that's what we've been getting and we are going to keep getting so consistently. Plus, we look at the fetches every day, and there's been one in that position since ages.

The N buoy reading shows that the tendency is for a slight drop in the period throughout the day, but the size should be fairly steady.
I don't have much to add, 4.8f 12s from 26 is what's in the water this morning and that's one of the two main things you need to know to pick the right spot for your skills and preference. The other is the wind, which I'll talk about below.

Current wind map shows:
- a fairly wide NW fetch. Related swell forecasted by Surfline to peak at 7.7f 15s from 315 at 2pm on Thursday Jan 12
- still more NNE energy, this time from quite up in the gulf of Alaska
- a small fetch down under

In my opinion the MC2km maps are the most reliable short term Maui wind forecast tool, so I'm happy to post them every time they are available when I do this call. This is the 7am one for the dawn patrollers. Should be pretty clean everywhere on the north shore this morning.

This is the noon one. Some of the desperate wind/kite surfers will challenge the very offshore trades that the afternoon will offer.

PS. Thanks a lot to blog reader Geoff that found the original, non photoshopped photo of Kai Lenny at Mavericks that I posted yesterday. Here's the link. While you're at it, check the other shots of that gallery too...
